Absolutely amazing, vegan BBQ wings!
Yes, we don’t need meat to make delicious BBQ wings! We have tofu. There are also other options as well, like for example seitan (wheat gluten) but I prefer the tofu taste. I know you may think “oh tofu, boring” but, at least try it and then make your judgments. When it comes to “boring” tofu, I recently posted these tofu marinades that will remove the boring part!
This recipe proves that we can definitely enjoy tasty, compassionate and healthier options than the traditional ones. And it is not complicated at all!
Once you prepare the tofu wings, fry them or bake them, choose the sauce to coat them in and enjoy! You can also check this recipe for homemade spicy balsamic BBQ sauce if you want to make your own sauce and add a little heat to these delicious tofu wings!
Here is a recipe on how to make great vegan BBQ tofu wings.
BBQ Tofu Wings
1 block of extra-firm tofu
½ cup flour (use chickpea flour or cornstarch to keep them gluten free)
1 Tbs. onion powder
1 Tbs. garlic powder
1 tsp. dried thyme
1 tsp. kosher salt
½ tsp. black pepper
a pinch of cayenne pepper
Cut a block of extra-firm tofu into shapes that resemble “wings” or fries. In order to get the best texture, freeze the block of tofu, then thaw, press and drain it.
In a large resealable storage bag or shallow bowl, combine flour, onion powder, garlic powder, dried thyme, kosher salt, black pepper and a pinch of cayenne pepper.
Add the tofu pieces to the bag or bowl and toss them around gently until the tofu is covered in the seasoned flour.
Heat 3 Tbs. vegetable oil in a large pan over medium-high heat. Shake off the excess flour from the tofu and cook them in batches in the pan until they are browned and crispy. This might take about 4-5 minutes per side. The 2nd batch will cook faster since the pan and the oil will be hotter.
You could also bake the tofu in a 375 degree oven for 20 -25 minutes. When the tofu wings are cooked, transfer them to the sauce mixture and toss to coat.
